Orally fixated?

may-june 2008 427-1 I believe my son is. This kid puts everything in his mouth, and I mean EVERYTHING! If it touches his hands it inevitably ends up in his mouth. From food, to his clothes, to his shoes, to his toys, to anything he finds on the ground. It is seriously driving me crazy. If I had a nickel for every time that I said, "Take that out of your mouth, or Please don't put that in your mouth." I seriously could have a very nice vacation fully funded, with extras too. As a baby he rarely picked things off the floor, but now literally everything touches his mouth. I am seriously amazed the kid hasn't picked up some disease yet.

So I beg all of you to help me. Any suggestions on how to get a three year old to keep things out of his mouth that don't belong there? If your suggestion works I may just bring you along on my fully funded vacation.

Oh my...this song is totally taking me back, I love it!

Sounds like he's seeking stimulation, you might want to try buying him something that he can chew on anytime he wants.

I found duct tape to be extremely helpful. If that doesn't work I don't know what to tell ya. All joking aside I don't think it ever stops. I still have to tell my 7 year old to stop putting toys in her mouth. Even my husband chews on strange items. It's a weird phenomenon. Good luck.

i can give you some behavior strategies that might work but are definetely a pain to keep implementing. some are actually pretty inhumane, just kidding. i think it may just be a phase. he's still sooo cute....teresa

Less,
I don't know that I can give advice b/c I don't have kids however, I am a school teacher..does that count? He could have some sensory issues (OT) I would try having him chew gum or anything chewy when he starts putting things in his mouth. Chat with him about it too.
Let me know if you need more ideas. I have an OT on hand!

Try putting cayenne pepper on everything...is that too mean? He would probably like it though! Perhaps letting him chew on gum would be a nicer alternative.

He is soo cute! Maybe if you made him wash his hands every time then he'd start hating it and stop?? I don't know-That could just be the germaphobic part of me talking :) Good luck!

(Not meaning wash his hands every time he puts something in his mouth-just when he puts his hands in his mouth! And I like the gum idea-that might work....)

Lessley I know exactly what you're going through. Annie did the exact same thing and it drove me absolutely crazy! She eventually stopped doing it. 2 years later she started the same habbit - not as bad. She just started chewing on her clothes! She's starting to stop that too though. I think it's just strange phases kids go through and you just have to wait it through.
