30

This birthday was a tough one for me. I don’t know why, but I have always dreaded turning 30. 30 just seemed so old.

So I wasn’t too excited for my birthday this year. Ryan knew I wasn’t excited, so he made sure to plan something a little extra special this year.

I woke up and got breakfast in bed: Life cereal and blueberry muffins. I am not a huge fan of hot breakfast foods for breakfast, but I LOVE cold cereal so this was perfect.

Then the kids gave me presents and cards that Ryan had them make for me. They were cute.

When Ryan left for work he handed me an envelope and told me I had to wait until he was gone to open it. In a nutshell, it told me to be ready at 6:30 dressed nice and to pack an overnight bag complete with a swimsuit.

After Ryan left he texted me and said “look outside. I had nothing to do with it.” I went to the window and there was a big sign in the front that said, “Lessley turns 30 today. Happy Birthday!”

Come 6:30, Ryan came home and we were ready to go. First we dropped the kids off at his parents house to sleep for the night and then we headed downtown. We went for dinner, then checked into a hotel in downtown Salt Lake. He gave me more gifts and then we headed down to the hot tub. Unfortunately the hot tub was more of a warm tub, but it was still fun to sit and relax.

The next morning we got up and went to breakfast and then Ryan had to go to work. So I did a little shopping by myself until I had to go pick up the kids.

It was a fun getaway, and kinda made me forget that I was getting old.

Two days later Ryan told me that he was going to take me to dinner again. He told me that he had to go to his soccer game first, but then he would come home and we would go. He called me about 20 minutes before we were supposed to go and said that he was running late, and asked if I would take the kids to his sister’s house who would be babysitting, and that by the time I got home he should be ready to go. This was the final clue of the day that I was pretty sure he was planning a surprise party. All day he had been weird about the house being clean and not letting the kids bring anything out of their rooms, and he did the dishes. So I knew something was up, but I decided to humor him. As I was driving the kids to his sister’s house I noticed a suspicious car parked next to an empty lot. I decided to drive by and see if I knew who it was, I couldn’t see their faces very well, because it was dark. I just kept driving. I turned the corner to go out of our neighborhood and I saw three cars parked on the side of the road, as I drove by I looked, and there were my friends. I smiled and waved.

When I got back from dropping off the kids, sure enough Ryan had some friends over for a surprise party. Hey, at least he tried. Unfortunately for Ryan I am super nosy and snoopy and so it is hard for him to do much behind my back.

It was a fun party and I appreciate all he did.

And so far 30 hasn’t been too bad.
